The Values of Jesus

Value: a person’s principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life.

What do you value?

Consider how you might answer the question “What are your core values?” Or “What do you value the most?”

Perhaps you’d say your family. That would be at the top of my list.

Maybe you value responsibility. Or security. Or a strong work ethic. Certainly, these are worthy values.

Maybe you value loyalty or honesty?

Perhaps empathy or respect?

There are all sorts of things we can choose to value.

But what happens if my values conflict with the values of another?

What if my core principles are different from another?

The root of most conflict and disagreement is a difference of values.

This Sunday, we are starting a new preaching series titled “The Values Of Jesus.”

As Christians, we want to make sure our values match with Jesus’ values. Over the next five weeks, we will explore specific traits that Jesus believes are important in life.

We will study the values of Jesus.

Sept. 8- The Values Of Jesus: My Neighbor

Jesus values seeing the “other” as a neighbor.

Key Verse: But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:29)

Sept. 15- The Values Of Jesus: The Truth

Jesus values the truth in ourselves and the world.

Key Verse: Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)

Sept. 22- The Values Of Jesus: Peace and Justice

Jesus holds in tension the need for both peace and justice in our world.

Key Verse: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9)

Sept. 29- The Values Of Jesus: Compassion and Forgiveness

Jesus transforms our hard hearts into tender hearts full of compassion.

Key Verse: When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked.“Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept. (John 11:33-35)

Oct. 6- World Communion Sunday!

The Values Of Jesus: Faith in Action

Jesus values not only an inner, private faith, but a faith lived out into the world.

Key Verse: In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. (James 2:17)

My prayer is that all of us seek to line up our personal values with those of Jesus.

Don’t forget— breakfast is this Sunday at 8:30 am.

See you on Sunday!
